Understanding why Millennials are turning their back towards Agriculture

Agriculture have played a major role in the development of our country , and everybody knows that. But as  time goes by, the key role  of  Agriculture is slowly fading in the perspective of many Filipinos, specially millennials.

An empty classroom, portraying the decreasing number of millennials involved in Agriculture.

Peer pressure

This is one of the many reasons  why millennials underestimates Agriculture. Because  they have grown into a misconception from their parents or relatives that taking an Agriculture course is not as noble compared to other courses such as nursing, accountancy and engineering. Little do they know that there are famous Filipinos who are Agriculturist or Agricultural Scientist,if not an Agricultural lawyer.

Everybody underestimates Agriculture

We all know that it has become a norm to us that if you are taking any related course in Agriculture automatically  it means that you are not good as anybody. Imagine you taking an Agriculture degree being compared to someone taking an Engineering degree. I know, that feeling pals.

As an Agriculture student, I want to tell everybody specially millennials that Agriculture must not be underrated because it is one of the foundations of Human Civilization. And remember that here in the Philippines Agriculture is the backbone of our economy.
So be proud that we are in the field of Agriculture, we feed the world, they need us and they will always be.

  1. Sadly, many millenials are not that hardworking and persistent like the old farmers that is why they opt to take a different degree..
Like my husband, his father did not send him to college for 1sem to make him experience the life in the farm..
But immediately the next sem, he enrolled and tried all his best to finish management accounting because he promised to himself that he will not come back again to the farm because it is VERY HARD to plow the land, and all.
How, i wish his thinking might change someday, because if all the millenials have the same thinking, what we will gonna eat in the future?
Maybe we should develop robots to farm? But the results or crop might be much different.. 😢

  2. Government policies on Agriculture suck. It has encouraged fragmentation to the point it is no longer profitable to run a small farm. In other nations, large tracts of farmland is the norm and mechanization of farming has made farming efficient, cost-effective and less labor-intensive. Agriculture has become big-time in other nations and it assures a stable food supply. Most of our farmers are still into agricultural practices that the Spaniards chanced upon when they came to our shores. This is a terrible indictment of our agricultural agencies which have done nothing to upgrade the farming industry. Perhaps because of the absence of lobbyists in Congress, we are being deluged with laws that oppress the poor farmers.
